To set up your dial up, first select a local number. Then you'll set up PPP access with the user name and password you were given for your account. Your user name is formed depending on your access plan. Note that while this looks similar to your email address, it is different. In particular, there is no ".com" in it.

You'll need to configure your computer to connect to the Internet using your modem, making a PPP connection, using the username and password provided when you sign up. Here is a sample configuration using Mac OS X 10.2.

Click on any picture for a full size version.

1. Select "System Preferences..." under the Apple menu.
2. Select the "Network" icon.

Click the pop-up menu next to "Show:" and choose "Internal Modem."

Click on the "TCP/IP" tab, if it isn't already selected. Next click the pop-up menu next to "Configure:" and choose "Using PPP." The DNS Servers and Search Domains may be left blank.

3. Clock on the "PPP" tab. If you haven't already selected your local access numbers, review the available numbers here, select one or two which are a local call for you, then return to continue configuration.

Enter your Account Name, which was provided when you signed up.

Enter your Password, which was also provided.

Enter the first number in the space labeld "Telephone Number." If a second local number is available, enter it in the space labeled "Alternate Number." You should enter these numbers exactly as you would dial them on a phone, including any special numbers like a preceding "9" to get an outside line.

4. Click "PPP Options..." at the bottom of the window.

We recommend that you check "Connect automatically when needed" so the computer will connect when an application attempts to access the Internet. If you want more control over when your phone line is picked up, leave this option unchecked.

We also recommend you uncheck "Disconnect if idle for [15] minutes." This will keep the connection from dropping if you take a brief break. If you'd like to be certain your phone line won't be tied up for a long time if you forget to disconnect, leave this option checked and select a time to be disconnected if you are not actively using the connection.

The remaining settings are the defaults

5. Click the "Proxies" tab. No proxies are required, so no boxes on this page should be checked.
6. Click the "Modem" tab.

Select the modem attached to (or in) your computer. You'll typically want to check "Enable error correction and compression in modem" as well as "Wait for dial tone before dialing."

Practically all phones support "Tone" dialing, so select this.

If you'd like to hear the modem connect, select "On" for the Sound.

Check "Show modem in menu bar" so you have an easy way to connect and see that you're online.

7. To finish, clock "Apply Now" in the lower right corner. Then connect to the internet by clicking on the phone icon in the menu bar and selecting "Connect"
